2. Grammar

A. "Again" in the past with 又 ‹ yòu ›

The word  ‹ yòu › can be used in Chinese to express an action that was repeated in the past. We can translate it as "again" in English. ‹ yòu › precedes the verb which is followed by the past marker ‹ le ›.

S + + Verb + (+ O)
  • 迟到 了。 ‹ Tā yòu chídào le. ›
    He is late again.
  • 你 怎么 今天 买 了 一件衣服 ? ‹ Nǐ zěnme jīntiān yòu mǎi le yī jiàn yīfú? ›
How come that today again you are buying jeans?

B. "Again" in the future with 再 ‹ zài ›

‹ zài › can also be translated "again", however, unlike ‹ yòu ›, it is used to express an action that should be repeated in the future.

S + + Verb (+ O)
  • 说 一次。 ‹ Qǐng zài shuō yī cì. ›
    Please repeat.
  • 我 明天 想 买 一些衣服。 ‹ Wǒ míngtiān xiǎng zài mǎi yī xiē yīfú. ›
I want to buy some clothes tomorrow again.

C. The cause and effect with "因为...所以... ‹ yīnwèi... suǒyǐ... ›"

因为 ‹ yīnwèi › and 以就 ‹ suǒyǐ › are often written in the same sentence for respectively introducing a cause and a consequence. However, when speaking, one of the two is often omitted.

因为 + Cause, + 所以 + Consequence
  • 因为 你迟到了, 所以 要说“对不起”。 ‹ Yīnwèi nǐ chídào le, suǒyǐ yào shuō "duìbùqǐ". ›
Because you are late, you should say "sorry".
  • 因为 你渴了,所以 应该喝水。 ‹ Yīnwèi nǐ kě le, suǒyǐ yīnggāi hē shuǐ. ›
Since you're thirsty, you should drink water.

D. "Although" with "虽然...但是... ‹ suīrán... dànshì... ›"

The structure "虽然...但是... ‹ suīrán... dànshì... ›" is relatively common in Chinese debates. 虽然 ‹ suīrán › precedes a fact while 但是 ‹ dànshì › precedes a contradiction.

虽然 + Fact, + 但是 + Contradiction
  • 虽然 她说不太饿, 但是 她点了很多菜。 Suīrán tā shuō bu tài è, dànshì tā diǎn le hěn duō cài. ›
Although he said he was not very hungry, he ordered many dishes.
  • 虽然 我病了,但是 还是去上课。 ‹ Suīrán wǒ bìng le, dànshì háishì qù shàngkè. ›
Although I'm sick, I'm still going to classes.

E. Modifying a noun to specify its duration with 的 ‹ de ›

In Chinese, it is possible to change a noun with ‹ de › to specify its duration. This is very useful to say for example "a 30-minute class", "a 3-hour movie," etc.

Duration + + Noun
  • 三十分钟 ‹ Sānshí fēnzhōng de kè ›
    A thirty minutes class
  • 一百二分钟 电影 ‹ Yībǎi èr fēnzhōng de diànyǐng ›
A movie of hundred twenty minutes

F. Structures with 是...的 ‹ shì...de ›

Sentences with "是...的 ‹ shì...de ›" are used in Chinese to draw attention to certain information in a sentence. This structure is often used to ask questions requesting a specific answer or to explain a situation by insisting on a particular detail.

Although this construction is not related to any particular time, it is mostly used to talk about the past.

S + + Information to emphasize + V +
  • 怎么 做 ‹ Nǐ shì zěnme zuò de? ›
    How did you do?
  • 昨天 来 ‹ Wǒ shì zuótiān lái de. ›
It was yesterday that I arrived. (→ emphasis on the moment)
  • 在 中国 学 汉语 ‹ Wǒ shì zài zhōngguó xué hànyǔ de. ›
It was in China that I learned Chinese. (→ emphasis on location)

G. Questions with 不是...吗? ‹ Bùshì...ma? ›

In Chinese, in a closed-ended question ‹ ma ›, it is possible to add 不是 ‹ bùshì ›at the beginning of the interrogative sentence to emphasize on the fact that you think knowing the answer. 不是 ‹ bùshì › can then be translated as "isn't it ?".

不是 + Sentence + 吗?

- Yes. Do you want me to go with you to go there again?
